The grow model: a practical framework for powerful coaching conversations

What is the grow model?

The GROW model is one of the most widely used frameworks in coaching because it gives structure to a conversation without making it rigid. Originally developed for performance coaching and now used across leadership, career, wellbeing, and executive coaching, GROW helps a coach and client move from “talking about” something to creating insight and action.

GROW is an acronym for goal, reality, options, and what next. In simple terms, it supports four steps:

Goal clarifies what the person wants. A good coaching goal is specific enough to guide the conversation, but meaningful enough to matter. It may focus on an outcome (what they want to achieve) and a direction (how they want to show up along the way).

Reality explores what’s happening right now. This is where the coach helps the client get honest and specific about facts, patterns, feelings, constraints, and what’s already been tried. Strong “reality” questioning avoids judgment and builds awareness.

Options opens the field of possibilities. Here, the coach encourages divergent thinking: different approaches, new perspectives, resources, supports, and experiments. The aim is to generate choices before narrowing to a plan.

What next (sometimes called “way forward” or “will”) converts insight into commitment. This stage identifies the best next steps, removes obstacles, clarifies support needed, and sets timelines and accountability.

Used well, GROW is less like a checklist and more like a compass: it keeps the conversation purposeful while leaving plenty of room for curiosity, empathy, and the client’s own wisdom.

Great coaching questions aligned to GROW

Below is a curated set of high-impact questions you can use as a quick reference. Pick the ones that fit the moment and the person in front of you.

Goal: clarify direction and success

Get clear on the focus

  • What would you like to focus on today?
  • What do you really want to explore in this conversation?
  • What’s the change you want to make?

Define success

  • What does success look like here?
  • How will you know you’ve achieved it?
  • What would be different if you got what you want?

Make it meaningful

  • Why is this important to you (and/or others)?
  • What’s the benefit of making this change?
  • How long do you want this change to last?

Create a simple scale

  • On a scale of 1–10, where are you now?
  • What number would you be happy with?
  • What would be a stretch—but still possible?

Reality: understand what’s happening now

Surface facts and patterns

  • What’s happening at the moment?
  • What led up to this?
  • What have you tried so far?

Bring in feelings and impact

  • What do you feel when you think about this?
  • How is this affecting you and your relationships/work?
  • How do you notice you’re behaving in this situation?

Broaden perspective

  • How might someone else describe this situation?
  • What impact is this having on the bigger picture?
  • Is there anything you might be missing in your thinking?

Check evidence

  • What’s the evidence for how you’re seeing it?
  • What evidence might you be overlooking?
  • What evidence counters that story?

Options: expand possibilities and choose well

Generate alternatives

  • What could you do?
  • If you had free choice, what would you do?
  • What else is possible?

Shift perspective

  • How could you think differently about this?
  • What would the person you most admire do here?
  • If you could do it over again, what would you do differently?

Test and compare

  • What are the strengths of each option?
  • What are the costs or trade-offs of each?
  • What are the consequences—if you do it, and if you don’t?

Resources and support

  • What do you need more clarity on?
  • What information do you need before you decide?
  • Who or what could support you to progress?

What next: convert insight into action and accountability

Commit to action

  • What will move you forward now?
  • What action will you take first?
  • What are your next steps?

Make it specific

  • What will you do, and by when?
  • What must you not do (the opposite of this action)?
  • What might get in the way, and how will you handle it?

Stretch and sustain

  • What can you do that will stretch you toward your goal?
  • What will help you sustain this change over time?
  • What support do you need to make this happen?

Accountability

  • How will you track progress?
  • Who will you tell about your action?
  • What help will you need from others?

A simple way to use this list in real sessions

If you want an easy rhythm, try this:

  1. Start with 2–3 goal questions to lock in focus.
  2. Go deeper with reality questions until you hear clarity and ownership.
  3. Open options wide, then narrow to the few that feel most energising.
  4. Finish with “what next” that includes a first step, timing, support, and accountability.

If you’d like, share your website tone/voice guidelines (or a link to an existing blog post) and I’ll rewrite this to match your style exactly (more formal, more conversational, more punchy, etc.).
